The Great Gatsby on Long Island
Celebrate like Gatsby
2025, marks The Great Gatsby 100th Birthday!
Long Island is the setting of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. The novel is set specifically on the North Shore, also known as the Gold Coast. The Gold Coast was a haven for the wealthy and they built large mansions on impressive estates. The fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg, where the main characters reside, are loosely based on real-life towns like Great Neck and Port Washington. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in Great Neck for a time and was likely influenced by the mansions and lifestyle he witnessed while residing here on Long Island.
